Marriage Seminar in Shipshewana

Heather and I just returned from a wonderful weekend “Marriage in God’s Way” seminar we led for couples from St. John Lutheran Church, Bingen, IN. It was great to retreat in the charming town of Shipshewana. We enjoyed time away from the normal routine with our most precious gift on earth…our spouse. Most of all, we delighted in learning to put our “Thumb Up” to Jesus as our most important relationship. Celebrating the grace and love we have from our Bridegroom, Jesus, we were inspired and renewed for showing that same love and grace to each other. We also caught a glimpse of our mission to share that love and grace with everyone, everywhere…handing out life.

What a delight to know that Jesus continues to unite us with His love and power. Thanks, dear new friends from Indiana, for letting Heather and me join you!

Dad’s 55th Anniversary of Ordination

It was such a joy to preach and celebrate with my dad in honor of the 55th anniversary of his ordination into the pastoral ministry. Dozens of family and friends were present at Dad’s home church, Grace Lutheran, in Wayne, Nebraska yesterday to show him how much they love him and thank God for his many years of faithful service. Throughout those years he has always pointed everyone to Jesus as Lord and Savior. I’m proud of my awesome dad and am so appreciative of the example he has been for me and countless others. I praise God for the wonderful gifts He has given to Dad and to the world through him!

Doomsday?

I saw headlines like this when I searched “September 23” today…

  • Conspiracy theorists and doom-mongers predict the world is ending
  • Stars are set to align on September 23 which could fulfill a Biblical prophecy
  • The outlandish theory will see ‘worthy’ Christians lifted by Jesus into heaven
  • The Revelation 12 Sign theory says Leo and Virgo will unite to bring the ‘Rapture’

Are the stars going to align in some special way on September 23? Sure!

Am I going into a frenzy of preparation for Jesus to come and take me home that day? No!

That is, I’m not going to do anything different than I do every day. I’m going to start every day with my “thumb up” to Jesus. I’m going to thank him for free forgiveness and the CERTAINTY of eternal life with Him as a free gift. I’m going to live with joy in my heart because I don’t need to fear His return…on September 23 or whenever He chooses to come.

Then, I’m going to live out all my relationships on earth with the same zeal to share the love of Jesus while I have time. I’m going to do all I can to love my wife and family so much that I keep them focused on Jesus as well. I’m going to encourage my fellow believers in Jesus to keep their eyes on Jesus for forgiveness, peace and purpose every day. I’m going to be open to every opportunity the Lord gives me to guide another person to put their trust in Jesus while we have time.

Could the world end on September 23? Sure!

Should we change what we’re doing because of it? NOT if we’re already living with a “thumbs up” worldview focused on Jesus first. And, if you’re not living that way already, NOW might be a good time to hear more about it. I wouldn’t even suggest you wait until September 23.

Safe in the Hand

20170513_112943.jpgMy firstborn child, Hannah, is now a college student. It was a tearful day two weeks ago when we left her on campus. It’s not easy to let go after 18 years of having face-to-face contact with her almost every day.

However, my wife, Heather, and I are secure in the knowledge that Hannah is safe “in the Hand.” What does THAT mean?

She is secure in the Hand of her gracious Creator and Savior, Jesus Christ. The one who claimed Hannah in her baptism will never leave her or forsake her. Hannah continues to confess her complete trust in Jesus and Jesus is fully worthy of that trust. No doubt about it!

Also, Hannah understands the “Hand” illustration I use all the time… “Thumbs Up to Jesus.” Her future path is secure as she lives her life with right relationship priorities as guided by the “Thumbs Up” illustration. She knows to: 1. keep her “thumb up” to Jesus as her first relationship priority, 2. wait patiently for a spouse to become her #1 human relationship, 3. cherish her family relationships next, 4. stay close to her church family after that and 5. be prepared to reach out with the love of Jesus in all her other relationships. Following these guiding principles, Hannah will be blessed to be a blessing in all she does.

Easy to go away to college? NO.

Possible to do, for parents and children? YES!

Where is our confidence? SAFE IN THE HAND!!!

Positivity

This past Tuesday I had the privilege to speak to a good number of the 900 teachers and support staff from the Grand Blanc public schools about leadership. I was at one of twenty-four stations along a “scavenger hunt” around town to learn about positive character traits. The overall event was part of a national campaign called the “Positivity Project.”

back-to-school

I was thrilled by how receptive everyone was to my message about leadership based on right relationships. They appreciated my sharing of the “Thumbs Up” illustration of relationship priorities. Not a one contested my message that a strong leader needs to have his or her personal spiritual life in order first before attempting to lead anyone else. I shared that Jesus Christ has revealed Himself as the key to my life and my leadership of others. Many heads nodded in agreement and the others listened attentively and respectfully.

I’m thankful that I could bolster the faith of the Christians who are serving in our public school system. I’m also very thankful that those who didn’t claim to be Christian were still willing to hear what I said about Jesus and relational leadership.

I share this as a reminder that we should never be afraid to share the Good News of what Jesus gives us. We don’t have to be confrontational or rude. We can give our testimony with love and respect. Then, the Holy Spirit will do the rest. I’m sure the Spirit was doing some powerful work among the Grand Blanc public schools staff last Tuesday and will continue to do some wonderful work in the year ahead. Life in God’s way is ALWAYS the best way!

Something New

Having just celebrated my 53rd birthday, it’s not as common for me to try something new. Yet, I find it’s always invigorating when I come across another way to see God’s awesome world. My new adventure this year was to try paddle boarding. I’ve always wanted to give it a go, so it brought a sense of excitement and a bit of nervousness when this opportunity presented itself. Good news! I didn’t kill myself. I didn’t even fall off and get soaked. I did, however, enjoy the calm stillness of Saginaw Bay in a way that made me feel almost as though I were walking on water.

This new perspective reminded me that God will ALWAYS have something new in store for us. He delights in delighting us. Most of all, I know that Jesus is eager to welcome us into the awesome new wonders of heaven. It will certainly be incredible.

If you find yourself getting bored with life or taking things for granted, step out and try something that stretches your comfort level a bit. Maybe go paddle boarding. Or, better yet, open the Word of the Lord and read about the awesome things He has in store for you…in this life and the next. Consider Paul’s words in 1 Cor. 2:9-10, “‘What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him’— these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit.” Dig into the Word and let the Spirit guide you to something new and glorious!

Stories of Hope!

Hope is elusive for many people. It will ALWAYS be out of reach if we rely on the promises and power of men. However, in Jesus Christ there is ALWAYS the sure and certain hope of wonderful things ahead. We KNOW we will be with Jesus in heaven for eternity. His death and resurrection guarantee it. The gift of faith received in Baptism and the Word of God assures us that Jesus’ gift IS ours for free.

We also have certain hope that Jesus will be with us each and every day to guide and bless us. Before He ascended into heaven, Jesus promised, “And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20, ESV)

STILL…the trials of this life can bring doubt and fear that threaten our hope. Global warfare. Rising health costs. Poor economy. Hostile politicians. Nasty neighbors. Personal failures. All of these and more can rob us of hope.

In such times it’s important to return to the Word of the Lord and cherish His promises. It’s also important to turn to trusted Christian friends who will lift you up and point you to Jesus by their words and actions of love. It’s so helpful to hear the faith stories of others who’ve been through trials, but have not lost hope.

That’s why I’m excited about an event coming up at Faith Lutheran Church on Sept. 10th at 9:45a.m. A dear couple in our faith family, Keith and Sarah Stone, will be sharing their story of hope. Keith was severely injured in a freak golf cart accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down. Over the past two years the Stones have been on a long and arduous road. Yet, through it all, Keith and Sarah have NEVER lost hope. Their story is an inspiration for us all. Plan to come here their encouraging story. As we keep our “thumb up to Jesus,” there is ALWAYS a reason for hope!

VBS Waves

This week has been awesome! I’ve been able to celebrate the love of God, our Maker, along with nearly 400 children and staff members in Faith Lutheran, Grand Blanc’s Vacation Bible School (VBS) program. The excitement has been palpable as the Holy Spirit has filled this place to overflowing.

vbs-sanctuary-2017

It certainly wasn’t the numbers that made this week so powerful, but it was the unbridled faith that was so evident. The children were eager to hear about the love of Jesus. They were uninhibited in singing His praises. They were eager to serve in Jesus’ name. They clearly want to give a “thumbs up” to Jesus and put Him first in their lives.

vbs-faithstones-2017

One great example of this attitude of putting Jesus first was a group of children who helped to make more “Faith Stones.” These are small ceramic “stones” that are taken out of the building and shared with a world that needs the blessings of faith in Jesus. Over the past year, nearly 2000 of these stones have been taken, literally, to the ends of the earth. With members crying out for more stones to share, we asked some VBS students if they’d be willing to help make more and they replied with an exuberant “YES!” Thanks to this extra help, many more stones will soon be ready to go. These stones will be “cast upon the waters” of the world to make more WAVES of Jesus’ love! That’s an example of what has been so awesome this week at VBS. That’s giving a big THUMBS UP to Jesus!

AWESOME Baptismal Memories

On July 7th I received the following picture and email …

joshua-petzold-baptism-7-7-13

Hi Pastor,

Amber and I just wanted to say thank you for baptizing Joshua four years ago today! Here’s a nice picture of the moment where the water, Word, and Holy Spirit came together to bless Joshua with that precious gift. Thanks for always being there for our family!

God bless you!

HOW AWESOME it is to have families who are clearly giving the “Thumbs Up” to Jesus! The fact that Jesus is the ultimate head of this family is clearly evident by the way this little boy has grown into a beautiful follower and proclaimer of Jesus as Lord and Savior.

Again, all I can say is AWESOME!
